School Energy Projects 101

The School Energy Coalition (SEC), in conjunction with the Coalition for Adequate School Housing, is offering School Energy Projects 101 and 201 online workshops.

The first in the series will be held on August 18 virtually. This web-shop will provide an introduction to the challenges facing school districts from California’s greening and climate initiatives. The panelist will discuss different types of energy projects and how to deliver those projects successfully for the community.

Attendees will hear from experts about the selection of a project team, what specific steps are needed to complete these projects, and the revenues and costs associated with energy projects. The discussion will be an introduction for those new to school energy projects and Title 24 requirements.

School Energy Projects 201

This web-shop will build upon our previous workshop “School Energy Projects 101” which is scheduled to be presented in August 2025.

The second installment will provide essential information about how to ensure your facilities have the infrastructure needed to meet future demand—like battery storage and EV chargers, developing and maintaining efficient energy projects, and complying with state mandates requiring school districts to transition away from internal combustion vehicles to electric or other lower carbon fuel options.

The discussion will be an introduction into these topics for those new to school energy projects, and will also be valuable for those looking to expand their knowledge in these areas.

Harnessing the Inflation Reduction Act for School energy Projects

This workshop is being rescheduled to an October date.

The School Energy Coalition (SEC) will offer an online workshop to provide guidance to school districts and facilities professionals on how to apply for and use federal resources available through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) for various types of energy-related projects. Participants will hear from the practitioner responsible for deploying the first county office of education project in the state and country to leverage tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act to transition to sustainable, resilient, efficient, cost-effective infrastructure.

Topics include:

  • The Inflation Reduction Act & Schools: An Overview
  • Demystifying the Elective Pay Filing Process
  • Energy and Grid Resilience: Mitigating Risk through Climate Adaptation

Solar and Battery Storage Requirements and Challenges for Public Schools

March 21, 2024

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Since the enactment of AB 32 the state has aggressively sought to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHG). In seeking to reduce GHG, the state will impose increasing demands on school districts and county offices of education.

This Joint CASH and SEC Web-Shop will focus on the topic of solar production and battery storage on school facilities and will include a discussion of maintenance of older solar projects. Attendees will have an opportunity to:

  • Receive guidance from the State Architect and the DSA Senior Electrical Engineer about implementing solar and battery storage requirements of the California Building Code for public school;
  • Learn of DSA’s role in assisting districts in meeting state energy goals;
  • Learn from school district practitioners how to begin establishing a “Solar and Battery Storage Plan” that is consistent with the Districts Facilities Master Plan;
  • Learn what to expect and how to approach the needs for maintaining older solar production equipment and how DSA distinguishes “maintenance” and “construction” when dealing with solar and battery storage equipment replacement and maintenance under DSA IR A-22 Section 1.3 and CAC 4-4314.

This is the first in a series of Joint CASH and SEC Web-Shops on the installation, operations and maintenance of solar production and battery storage. Information about future Joint CASH and SEC Web-Shops on electric buses, bus charging facilities and related solar projects will be discussed at the March 21st Web-Shop.
