About Us

The School Energy Coalition (SEC) seeks to present new ideas that work to provide a healthier learning environment for California’s students while lowering school spending on energy and water.  Our membership consists of school districts (large and small), community colleges and representatives from the private sector who specialize in energy and water efficiency and renewable energy.  Membership provides access to legislative information, educational forums and legislative summits that allow schools seeking to learn more about general fund savings through energy and water efficiency and renewable projects with networking opportunities.

SEC was started in February 2011 by a small group of K-12 public schools interested in utility bill savings through energy efficiency and renewable installations. In 2012 and 2013 the SEC organization was instrumental in shaping the K-14 focus of the Proposition 39 program that was passed by California voters and is now providing millions of dollars in energy efficiency and renewable energy funding for local education agencies (LEAs) and community colleges statewide. Since that time our membership has grown and now includes school districts, county offices of education and community colleges in every corner of the state. Join us.

SEC continues to work tirelessly to ensure that schools have a voice before the State and Legislature and to address legislative and regulatory actions being considered by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the California Energy Commission (CEC), the Division of the State Architect (DSA), the Department of Water Resources and the Air Resources Board (ARB).  We advocate for programmatic and budgetary opportunities for school energy and water projects, along with technical assistance and training for schools that are seeking to become more efficient and to avail themselves of renewable sources.
